Paddling and cycling enthusiasts participating in the inaugural X Lakes Winter event were greeted with ideal weather conditions at the start of the race on Saturday 13 July. Heavy winds the night before hadn’t deterred the hardy athletes who took to the water in the first leg of this solo or team event at the Touw River Mouth in Wilderness.
The paddlers negotiated the twists and turns of the Touw and Serpentine Rivers before the transition to mountain bikes at Island Lake. The new mountain bike route opened with kind permission of private landowners saw the field becoming further spaced with the steep accents and descents having to be negotiated. At the Pine Lake Marina transition, paddlers were greeted by mirror-like conditions on Swartvlei and some very fast paddling was achieved in the leg of the race. From Hoogekraal the cyclists then had to work hard on the climbs to Karatara and Reenendal via the Homtini Pass before being rewarded with the Phantom Pass decent to the Old Drift on the Knysna River. The paddlers had the honor of finishing off the event with another 11km of paddling to the finish at Tappas on Thesen Island.
Feedback received by Chain Gang Events Race Director, Juan Botes, indicated that it had been a great event. “Many of the 2012 X Lakes Summer athletes had returned to tackle the inaugural X Lakes Winter event, and this showed us that we were onto something great. Thank you to the sponsors Palm Tyres, Pine Lake Marina, Tappas and Squirtlube that made the event possible.” said Botes.
Winners in the solo categories for men and women were Lood Rabie (6h06) and Kate Southey (7h07) respectively. In the team categories Squirtlubers (4h14) were the winners in the mens race, Merrell / Due South Ladies (5h10) took the female honors and the mixed team of Merrell Juniors (4h52) also took first place.
