On the 21st of December 2013 the 3rd edition of the X Lakes took place, namely the X Lakes Summer 2013. From the pre-entries we could already see that it will be a hotly contested race with some top paddlers and cyclists combining as teams and quite a few talented multisport athletes entering the solo categories.
The days running up to the event were very hot and it was a concern that it might be the same for race day. Fortunately the weather was perfect the morning and even a bit of a cool drizzle at the start.
The team of nephews, Johan Ubbink and Gert Heyns, lead from the start to the finish and manage to complete the 100km event in a very fast 04:41:42 being 1st overall and the winners of the Mens Team Category.
The “tried and tested” Mixed Team, Ben Giliomee and Kaylie Beers, (still Juniors!) made it 3-in-a-row and won the Mixed Team Category with an overall 2nd position and time of 05:11:13.
The Mens Solo category was hotly contested by a group of top paddlers consisting out of, Pierre-Andre Rabie, Heinrich Schloms, Adam Bothma, Simon Oosthuizen and a “very young 60+” Lood Rabie (X Lakes Winter Solo winner). In the end the experience of a previous X Lakes and very good pacing in the MTB sections gave Simon Oosthuizen the edge and he won in 05:22:40 and 3rd overall.
Our Ladies Solo winner, Cherisse Hansen, more known for her Trail running endeavors (KAEM 2013 – 250km in 7 days in the Kalahari) completed the course in 07:35:50.
Thank you to each and every participant that took part and in my eyes you are all winners in completing the event – hope to see you at the next one in 2014 to better that time!
This event will not be possible with all the volunteers (friends offering up their free time to help), marshals, landowners and business owners that all contribute to make it a success. I thank you all and wish you the very best for 2014!
