Newsletter February – 2019
What a year 2019 are set out to be: we have elections, Rugby World Cup, many planned adventures, as well as un-planned ones (which normally turn out the best of all!)
The mountain biking, as well as running calendar are in full swing and it is great to see so many faces at the events.
The Eden (Southern Cape) Spur Schools dates are now finalized and it should remain like it is for now:
The Madibaz XCO series dates are also finalized and they are as follow:
The date selections were a BIG give-and-take negotiation process and as hard as we tried, there are still clashes with other events (especially at school level), but this is the best we could do. Like a friend of my always say: Life are full of choices, some you like and some you don’t, but you have to make them.
This past weekend was the Oubos MTB race and I was really chuffed for the Blanco Primary School, their sponsors and volunteers that put up a well-attended event. The results are available at the following link: Oubos Results Link.
The two Eden upcoming MTB events on the calendar are the following:
9 March 2019 – The Giant Pumpkin Festival MTB Race & Trail Run. 15km Trail Run, 25/60/100km MTB/Mini-Fondo. Cash Prizes and Premium Goodie Bags for Winners in all Race Categories. Goodie Bags for all entrants. Come & join us for an incredible weekend. There are good bags for all entrants and very good cash prizes.
16 March 2019 – Kingfisher MTB & Trail Run Challenge. 18th edition of this classic race and The Hoekwil Primary School biggest fundraiser. There will be 4 MTB distances namely 18km (Fun Ride), 30km, 60km and 80km on the Saturday and two Trail runs of 8km and 12km.
Trail Running News
The Trail running scene has taken a bit of a backseat at the moment with most of the runners eating and breathing qualifiers for the big two races of the year: Two Oceans & Comrades. Yours truly will also don the road running kit this year to take on another voyage at the TOM, so please be kind to him when you see him on the roadJ. Wish everybody good luck and no injuries.
Upcoming Trail Running Events that I will be part of are the following:
As you all know I am a big supporter for “minimalist running footwear” (if your feet and bone structure have no issues) and two well-known minimalistic activists have now joined forces. Please check out Doc Stuart Hutcheson shop: Moove and the contribution by Andrew Barnes with the T-Rockets. For those that might be wondering – yes, that is the sandals that I ran with at the GTR TT.
Talking about GTR (Garden Route Trail Running), if you have not joined them yet, you are missing out. Many of their volunteers have cleared existing trails and have added some new trail gems. There are always volunteers that will go and run with newcomers, as well as runners new to the area.
This is all for now and hope to see at the events. Be safe out there!
